Exploring New Possibilities and Values of Urushi
Through sports that were newly introduced at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, this project showcases the potential of Urushi as a natural, eco-friendly material that is gentle on both people and the planet. It highlights the distinct character of urushi, which becomes richer and more expressive with use, and introduces cool and contemporary interpretations of this traditional craft.
The project seeks to challenge common perceptions of Urushi. Often seen as expensive, difficult to maintain, easily damaged, or unsuitable for modern lifestyles and living spaces, Urushi is reimagined here with a new perspective on how it can be appreciated and used.
URUSHI×SURF
In collaboration with Australian environmental advocate and wooden surfboard shaper Tom Wegener, the Urushi Alaia project introduced the world’s first Urushi-coated alaia board. This board has become a symbol of Urushi’s potential as a sustainable and environmentally conscious material.

URUSHI×SKATE
This initiative explores a fresh way to enjoy Urushi by embracing the scratches and marks left by skating as part of its evolving character. Similar to how denim or leather develops personality over time, Urushi is presented as a material that grows more beautiful and individual with use.

URUSHI×BMX
Combining Urushi with materials like metal, and in partnership with Yohei Uchino, a former BMX World Champion, a one-of-a-kind Urushi-coated BMX bike was created. A promotional video was also produced to showcase a bold and stylish new vision of Urushi. At the same time, the project shares the strength of the material and the beauty that develops with age. Custom bicycles with original Urushi-coated frames have also attracted attention and sparked conversation.
